Berhampur: With the Odisha government imposing a ban on fishing activities from Tuesday for mass nesting of Olive Ridley, Forest officials of Ganjam district launched sea patrolling at Rusikulya river mouth.

Divisional Forest Officer, Berhampur along with Khallikot ranger Siddharth Sahu and Forest officials started the patrolling from Purunabandh village near Rusikulya river mouth in a mechanised boat. The patrolling would ensure prevention of fishing upto 20 km from the sea coast.

Earlier in the day, the government announced ban on fishing activities for seven months due to the beginning of the nesting season of endangered Olive Ridley turtles.

It may be noted that the prohibition is clamped every year to ensure that the turtles do not get entangled in fishing nets or come under the paddle of trawlers. Fishing activities have been banned in an area spanning 20 km from the mouths of rivers Dhamara, Devi, and Rusikulya.
