New Delhi: Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar was arrested in connection with the Chhatrasal Stadium brawl that led to the death of a wrestler, Sagar Rana.
Sushil Kumar was nabbed in the national capital on Sunday morning. Sushil Kumar’s associate, Ajay Kumar, who had been accompanying the wrestler ever since Sagar Rana’s murder, has also been arrested.
Sushil, India’s only two-time individual Olympic medallist, was absconding for over a fortnight after he and others were accused of beating up 23-year-old former junior wrestler Rana in a brawl at Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4. Rana later succumbed to his injuries.
Delhi Police had issued a look-out notice and a court non-bailable warrant against the champion wrestler. He was reported to have applied for anticipatory bail on May 18, but his plea was rejected by the court.
Delhi Police even announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh for information on Sushil’s whereabouts.
According to the cops, the brawl took place between Sushil Kumar and Ajay (now arrested), Prince, Sonu, Sagar Rana, Amit and others in the parking area of the stadium. Thereafter, police registered the case under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act at the Model Town Police Station.
