India’s Olympic Hero Sushil Kumar Not Arrested Yet: Delhi Police

New Delhi: Reputed wrestler and Indian Olympic hero Sushil Kumar is yet to be arrested, clarified Delhi Police on late Saturday evening dismissing certain media reports that said he had been nabbed.

“Sushil Kumar has been arrested near Jalandhar. His associate Ajay Kumar, also accused in the case (murder of wrestler Sagar Dhankar), has also been arrested,” news agency IANS published a story quoting sources early evening.

Within hours Delhi Police claried that Kumar was still on the run.

Sushil, India’s only two-time individual Olympic medallist, is absconding for more than a fortnight after he and others were accused of beating up 23-year-old former junior wrestler Dhankar in a brawl at Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4. Dhankar later succumbed to his injuries.

Delhi Police issued a look-out notice and a court non-bailable warrant against Sushil. He was reported to have applied for anticipatory bail on May 18, but the court rejected his plea.

Delhi Police even announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh for information on Sushil’s whereabouts.
