One Odisha Seat Among 12 Rajya Sabha Vacancies To Go To Polls On Sept 3

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Election to fill 12 vacancies in Rajya Sabha, including one from Odisha, will be held on September 3, the Election Commission of India (ECI) informed on Wednesday. 

A total of 10 vacancies came up in the House of Elders after the sitting MPs were elected to the Lower House, while two members from Odisha and Telangana resigned from their seats last month.

In a sudden turn of events, Mamata Mahanta, the BJD Rajya Sabha member from Odisha, resigned from the Upper House on July 31 two years before completion of her tenure. She was elected to the Rajya Sabha on April 3, 2020. The OBC leader from Mayurbhanj also quit the regional party and joined the BJP on August 1.

According to the ECI, notifications for the polls will be issued on August 14, the last date for filing nominations is August 21, and the last date for withdrawals will be August 26 (for Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Tripura) and August 27 (for Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Telangana and Odisha). The polling will be conducted on September 3 from 9 am to 4 pm and the counting of votes will be taken up from 5 pm, with the results expected the same day for all the 12 seats, it added.
