New Delhi: In an embarrassing case of mistaken identity, a Member of Parliament (MP) was ‘suspended’ for unruly behaviour in Lok Sabha despite not being present in the House on Thursday.
Trinamool Congress’ Derek O’Brien was suspended from Rajya Sabha after he went close to Upper House chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar in the well of the house to question why the Opposition’s demand for a reply from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday’s major security breach was not considered.
Later in the day, 14 Lok Sabha MPs were suspended for the remainder of Winter Session for disrupting House proceedings. The list included DMK leader SR Parthiban’s name.
DMK complained that Parthiban was not in the House on Thursday as he is in Chennai.
Thereafter, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi clarified that the inclusion of one MP’s name among suspended list was a mistake, resulting from a misidentification.
The minister informed that a request was made to the Speaker to remove the wrongly-implicated MP’s name and the Speaker accepted it.
Hence, 13 MPs have been suspended from Lok Sabha, not 14, plus one from Rajya Sabha, making it a total of 14 for the day.
