New Delhi: Navjot Singh Sidhu will return to active politics if the Congress declares him as the party’s chief ministerial face in Punjab, the former cricketer’s wife and party leader Navjot Kaur Sidhu has said.
Navjot Kaur Sidhu also claimed that they don’t have money to give to any party, but can transform Punjab into a ‘golden state’, reported PTI.
“We always speak for Punjab and Punjabiyat… but don’t have Rs 500 crore, which we can give to sit in the chief minister’s chair,” Navjot Kaur told reporters on Saturday after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to complain about issues like law and order in the state.
Asked if anyone had asked for money from them, she said nobody has demanded it, but “the one who gives a suitcase of Rs 500 crore becomes the CM.”
She went on to state if any party gives him (Sidhu) that power, he can improve Punjab. “We do not have money to give it to any party, but we will give results, and we will turn Punjab into a golden state.”
Navjot Kaur pointed towards infighting within Punjab Congress, and claimed there are five leaders aspiring for chief minister’s position, who won’t let Sidhu come to the fore.
Navjot Kaur said her husband was “strongly attached” with Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
“But with so much infighting, I don’t think they will let Navjot Sidhu be promoted, as there are already five CM faces, and they are hell-bent on defeating the Congress. If they (high command) understand this, then it will be a different matter,” she said.
Asked if the cricketer-turned-politician will rejoin the BJP, his wife said: “I cannot comment on his behalf.”
Saying that Sidhu will return to active politics if the Congress names him as CM candidate, Navjot Kaur asserted, “But otherwise, he is earning good money, and he is happy.”
Assembly elections in Punjab are due in 2027.
Sidhu, a former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief, did not campaign in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and has refrained from participating in any event or activity of the party for many months now.
Sidhu, who had made a comeback to cricket commentary in IPL and television programmes in 2024, launched his YouTube channel ‘Navjot Sidhu Official’ in which he shares his life experiences, speaks about cricket, commentary and gives motivational talks.
