Srinagar: A soldier was killed and two others injured during an ongoing gunfight between joint security forces and terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday.
“During the ongoing operation, fierce gunfight is continuing. One of our bravehearts sustained grievous injuries in the exchange of fire and has succumbed despite best medical efforts. Operation is in progress,” Indian Army’s White Knight Corps posted on X.
The deceased soldier has been identified as Sepoy Gaykar Sandip Pandurang, who was from Karandi village in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district. He was engaged in the encounter at Kishtwar’s Singhpora Chatroo area.
The injured soldiers have been taken to a nearby government hospital even as the encounter is underway, informed an official.
Codenamed ‘Operation Trashi’, the joint operation involves units from 2 Para, 11 Rashtriya Rifles, 7 Assam Rifles, and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu & Kashmir Police.
The encounter broke out at around 7 am after security forces received intel about the presence of a group of three to four terrorists in the Chattroo forests.
Additional troops have been deployed and all access routes to the encounter site have been sealed as precaution.
The latest operation comes a week after three Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists were eliminated in separate anti-terror actions in Nadir village of Tral area in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
There have been intensified security efforts in parts of south Kashmir following the gruesome Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, when 26 civilians were shot dead in front of their family members at Baisaran valley.
