Srinagar: Security agencies went into high alert in Jammu and Kashmir after drones were spotted in several areas along the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC) in Samba, Rajouri and Poonch areas on Sunday evening.
All the unmanned aerial vehicles entered from the Pakistan side and returned after hovering for a few minutes, officials told news agency PTI.
“A few Pakistan Army drones were sighted along the line of control in the Naushera-Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army troops undertook counter-unmanned aerial systems measures, forcing them to return,” ANI posted on X, quoting defence sources.
Army troops in the Nowshera sector of the LoC also fired at the drones using light and medium machine guns after spotting them over the Gania-Kalsian village at around 6.35 pm, PTI said.
A drone was also spotted in the Khabbar village of Rajouri district around the same time. Officials said that the object, with a blinking light, came from the direction of Dharmsal village in Kalakote and moved further towards Bharakh.
A similar object was seen hovering for several minutes over Chak Barbal village in Ramgarh sector of Samba around 7.15 pm.
Another drone-like object was seen coming from Tain towards Topa in Mankote sector, located along the LoC, in Poonch district at 6.25 pm.
Pakistan-based terror outfits have been using drones to send in weapons, ammunition, explosives and narcotics across the IB and LOC.
On January 9, security forces had recovered an arms consignment, allegedly delivered by Pakistani drones in Paloora village of Ghagwal near the IB in Samba district.
The weapons included two pistols, three magazines, 16 rounds of ammunition and a grenade.
