New Delhi: India on Tuesday expelled a Pakistan High Commission official working in New Delhi for engaging in activities inconsistent with his diplomatic role.

He has been asked to leave the country within 24 hours.

“The Government of India has declared a Pakistani official, working at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, persona non grata for indulging in activities not in keeping with his official status in India. The official has been asked to leave India within 24 hours,” a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

A formal demarche conveying the same has been issued to the Charge d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission, it added.

This came two days after India halted military actions across the border following a request from Pakistan. India had launched Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. As Pakistan tried to escalate tensions with drone strikes on several border states, Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets struck 11 military air bases across Pakistan in a coordinated, precision-led campaign on May 10, causing extensive damage.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi also debunked Pakistani military claims of using its hypersonic missiles fired from JF-17 fighter jets to destroy India’s S-400 air defence system in Adampur. He visited the airbase this morning and spoke to the jawans with a S400 in the backdrop.
