Panic Spreads at PMG Square In Bhubaneswar As Youth Climbs Tree To Attempt Suicide

Bhubaneswar: Panic spread at Lower PMG Square in Bhubaneswar on Monday as a young man climbed a tree and threatened to commit suicide.

According to sources, the youth, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, climbed a roadside tree near the busy junction in the city in the afternoon. He started shouting and threatening to hang himself with a towel from the tree.

Soon a crowd gathered there and some locals tried to convince him to come down. But the youth kept on saying that he had decided to take his own life as a local TV channel had tarnished his image by embroiling his name in a controversy.

With the crowd started swelling, the road was blocked affecting movement of vehicular traffic on the road that leads to the state Assembly.

On being informed, police and Fire Brigade personnel reached the spot. They also spoke to the youth and requested him to climb down. As the youth did not relent, some Fire personnel went up to him and brought him down. The whole exercise lasted for more than one hour.

Later, the youth was admitted to the Capital Hospital. He seemed to be a mentally disturbed person, police sources said.
