Kolkata: An Odia tech entrepreneur, Sampad Swain, has accused Kolkata Police of harassment during document verification for passport renewal, suspecting him to be a Bangladeshi.
Taking to Twitter on Monday, Swain posted: “Facing harassment from @KolkataPolice on doc verification in in passport renewal. Given ~ 10 docs. Now, forcing me to prove my father’s citizenship too (PS his Aadhar doesn’t work – cops want to be sure we are not Bangladeshis.”
He tagged Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and the PMO in his tweet.
Swain, an Odia who grew up in Kolkata, is the founder of instamojo, a top rated payment gateway. His name also features in an elite list of top 20 start-up founders and entrepreneurs.
Kolkata Police soon replied to his tweet: “No question of harassment. We will sort your problem out. Please let us know the name of your local PS and other relevant details.”
Later, Swain again took to the micro blogging site to say that the problem was finally resolved. “Thank you everyone for amplifying my message. Sorted for now. The incident reminded me once again that I’m vastly privileged (most are not),” he tweeted.
