Bhubaneswar: A patient suffering from acute pyelonephritis, a bacterial infection causing inflammation of the kidneys, accompanied by septic shock was successfully treated at the Phulnakhara campus of the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital.
The patient, a 42-year-old male, was brought to the hospital on April 3, complaining of fever, breathlessness and altered sensorium. He was admitted under the care of Dr Gouri Shankar Ray, Critical Care Medicine Specialist, in the Intensive Care Unit.
He was intubated the next day due to respiratory distress and had to undergo dialysis four times. The patient underwent Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy (URSL) to remove a kidney stone.
A team of doctors including the nephrologist and radiologist were involved in the treatment of the patient. As his condition improved, he was removed from the ventilator on April 6 and subsequently discharged.
The patient is now able to perform his day-to-day activities.
