Kolkata: Moments after the Sealdah court pronounced former civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy guilty in the RG Kar rape and murder case on Saturday, Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar said there were doubts regarding the involvement of more than one person in the crime.

“The court has convicted him (Sanjay Roy), but the people of West Bengal believe that more than one person may have been involved in the incident. When the case was being investigated for five days by the Kolkata Police, evidence was tampered with in those five days… We want strict punishment to be given… The RG Kar incident has exposed that the law and order situation in the state of West Bengal is not good,” he told the ANI.

‘There were bites on my daughter’s neck, but swab was not collected…’

Earlier in the day, the victim’s father raised doubts about the CBI investigation into the case. The central agency had taken over the case from Kolkata Police following orders of Calcutta High Court.
“I have no idea about the recent court proceedings… CBI never called me anywhere, they came to our residence once or twice but whenever we asked them about the investigation, they always said it was underway. There were bites on my daughter’s neck but a swab was not collected from there. In the post-mortem report, there was no concrete evidence. CBI is not trying much. There is someone involved in this…In the DNA report, it can be seen that 4 men and 2 women were present there. We want all the people involved in this to be punished,” the victim’s father told ANI.

Heavy security cordon outside Sealdah court

The Sealdah court complex was cordoned off, with a heavy deployment of 300 security personnel on Saturday ahead of the verdict in the RG Kar case.

Hundreds of people from different walks of life gathered outside the court and raised slogans, some of them holding placards and banners demanding death penalty for Roy.

After pronouncing the verdict, the judge observed that the safety and security of the accused was also important, before sending him back to jail.

On August 9 last year, the body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in a semi-naked state in the seminar hall of the government hospital.

According to reports, the victim had 16 external and nine internal injuries, with the postmortem confirming death by manual strangulation following sexual assault.

Sanjay Roy was arrested the next day and identified through a Bluetooth earphone set found near victim’s body and CCTV footage showing him entering the hall.

The incident sparked widespread outrage and protests across India, led by doctors, medical students, and the Indian Medical Association, demanding justice and improved safety measures for healthcare professionals.
