Patrapur (Ganjam): If it’s winter, picnics are the order of the day.
However, one such happy occasion turned tragic on Sunday after a bus plunged into a gorge in Odisha’s Ganjam district, leaving one person dead and 16 others injured.
The schoolbus, carrying teachers, female teachers and other staff members of a private school based in Berhampur, was returning from Barihapathara when the mishap occurred near Sapukhata, in the Patrapur area.
Local people rushed to the spot and assisted in rescue efforts, helping to bring those injured out of the bus.
The injured passengers were rushed to Patrapur Medical Centre for treatment.
One of the injured, identified as Ratna Bisoi, was declared dead by doctors on arrival. The condition of four injured persons was reportedly critical.
They are being shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for advanced treatment.
