Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs. 1000 crore immediate assistance to West Bengal ravaged by cyclone Amphan after making an aerial survey of the affected areas on Friday.
Addressing the media along with chief minister Mamata Banerjee, Modi said that the people of India are standing with the people of West Bengal in these difficult times and assured all possible help from the Centre to the cyclone-affected state.
He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to the seriously injured in the cyclone in the state.
Modi had arrived at the Kolkata airport at 10.50 am and was received by Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, the chief minister and senior state BJP leaders.
Mamata briefed the PM on the ground situation before joining him for an aerial survey. The two leaders also held a review meeting on the post-cyclone situation, sources said.
PM Modi is scheduled to visit Odisha later and conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas in the state.
