New Delhi: The Congress, on Wednesday, lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he embarked on a two-day visit to Israel, accusing him of “moral cowardice” for cozying up his “dear friend” and Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu amid worldwide condemnation over Gaza’s devastation and West Bank settlements.
Senior leader Jairam Ramesh invoked India’s proud pro-Palestine legacy referring to a 1981 commemorative stamp in solidarity and formal recognition of Palestine in 1988.
“That was a different era. Now the Indian Prime Minister brazenly embraces the man who has reduced Gaza to rubble and dust and who is orchestrating the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank,” Ramesh said on X, contrasting past India’s principles with Modi’s current stance.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed the similar sentiment, urging Modi to spotlight Gaza’s “genocide” in his Knesset address.
“I hope that the Hon Prime Minister @narendramodi ji mentions the genocide of thousands of innocent men, women and children in Gaza while addressing the Knesset on his upcoming trip to Israel and demands justice for them.”
she posted on X.
She reminded that India has long championed “truth, peace and justice” on the global stage.
The visit, Modi’s second to Israel in nine years, kicked off Wednesday to bolster defence, trade and strategic ties—elevated to partnership during his 2017 trip.
The Congress on Tuesday alleged that the government has abandoned the Palestinians and said the prime minister was going to Israel despite that country’s attacks on civilians in Gaza continue “mercilessly”.
