New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of Delhi-Meerut Expressway here on Sunday. The Rs 7,500-crore project spans from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to UP Gate.
The 14-lane highway is expected to reduce the travel time to almost 45 minutes from two-and-a-half hours now.
After the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi embarked on a road show on Expressway. He was accompanied by Road Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari. The duo travelled for almost six kms, before Modi flew to Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh to attend another ceremony.
The first phase of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway has been constructed at the cost of Rs 842 crore.
It will be 82 km long, of which the first 27.74 km will be 14-lane, and the rest 6-lane. There will be a dedicated cycle track on the Expressway. It will also help to do away with as many as 31 traffic signals on the Delhi-Meerut road, which is considered one of the busiest highways in the region.
The foundation stone of the project was earlier laid by PM Modi in December 2015.
