New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lauded the Indian contingent for its showing at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, where the country finished with 39 medals, including 13 gold.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister commended the athletes for their remarkable skill, grit and commitment throughout the competition.

“Proud of our contingent’s performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Delighted that India has won 39 medals, including 13 Golds. Congrats to the medal winners,” PM Modi said.

“Throughout the Games, our talented athletes have displayed exceptional skill, determination and dedication. Their hardwork will keep inspiring our youngsters,” he added.

Modi also conveyed his good wishes to the Indian team for the road ahead, saying he hoped the athletes would continue to excel and add to the country’s honour.

“My best wishes to the entire Indian contingent for the endeavours ahead. May they continue to give their very best and bring further glory to the nation,” PM Modi said.

The 11-day Commonwealth Games drew to a close with Scotland formally transferring the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India during a grand closing ceremony, marking the handover to the host of the centenary edition in 2030.

Ahmedabad will stage the 2030 Commonwealth Games, making India only the second country after Australia to host the multi-sport event more than once. India previously hosted the Games in New Delhi in 2010.

India’s official handover representatives were Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who received the flag and baton at the ceremony, as reported by NDTV.

There was also plenty for India to celebrate on the field, with the country ending fourth in the medal standings with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze — to complete a successful campaign. Although that total was below the 61 medals India secured in Birmingham in 2022, the numbers told only part of the story.

A total of 30 medals from the Birmingham tally came in disciplines that were left out of the Glasgow schedule. With a much smaller contingent of 122 athletes, compared with 210 in the previous edition, India still managed to hold on to fourth place and record a better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes making their way back with medals.

Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh stood out as the only Indian to claim two medals. With the closing ceremony over and the handover complete, the spotlight now shifts to Ahmedabad, which will host the centenary edition in 2030.
