Chandigarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reacted to the death of seven conservancy workers – including six women – in a hit-and-run case in the Nuh district of Haryana on Saturday morning. The workers were cleaning the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway around 10 am, when a speeding multi-utility van ran them over. Four others were critically injured in the accident.
“The incident in Nuh, Haryana, is heart rending. I offer my condolences to the families of the deceased. May the Almighty provide them the strength to ride over this difficult phase in their lives. I also pray for the quick recovery of those injured in the accident. The state government is engaged in relief operations,” Modi posted on X.
According to the police, the workers, identified as Resham (60), wife of Gulab Singh; Prem (60), wife of Ramsingh; Ratna (40), wife of Ramesh; Pista (30), wife of Mahendra; Jaydei (40), wife of Deshraj; Satyavati (30), wife of Raju, and As Mohammad (45), son of Aaseen, were killed on the spot.
Six of the victims were from Kherikalan village in Pinangwa area, while As Mohammad was a resident of Jhimrawat village, both in the Nuh district.
“The accident took place near pillar number 76 at Ibrahimvas village in the Firozpur Jhirka block of Nuh district. The group was cleaning the road when the van hit them at high speed,” a senior police official said.
The four injured have been moved to the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi for specialised treatment. The police are scanning CCTV footage to track the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident.
After the Pahalgam terror strike, authorities are not writing off the possibility of this being a lone-wolf attack. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is not new to accidents, but they normally take place when visibility is low. On this case, the cleaning gang was well visible from a distance and the vehicle had ample scope to slow down or even stop.
