New Delhi: Amidst the tariff row with the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday had had a detailed conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on several important issues.
The phone call between the two leaders took place a day after National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval called on President Putin at the Kremlin.
After Doval announced on Thursday that Putin will visit India soon, and the dates “are almost finalised”, Modi stated he looked forward to hosting the Russian President.
“Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine. We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda, and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year,” Modi shared in a post on X.
Putin last visited India in December 2021, during the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit in Delhi. Modi, on the other hand, visited Russia twice last year – to attend the 22nd Russia-India Summit in July and participate in the BRICS Summit in October.
Modi reiterated India’s consistent position about peaceful resolution of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.
The telephonic meeting came a couple of days after US President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff (50% in all) on India for importing oil from Russia.
India made it clear that the US move was “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”, stating that its imports are based on market factors and with the objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India.
