New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a bilateral meeting on September 11, ahead of the BRICS Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
“We’re looking forward to the President and Prime Minister having another bilateral meeting during the visit. It is scheduled for Friday, so, as always, they will first touch on the bilateral agenda,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday.
The 18th BRICS Summit will take place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
India took over the BRICS presidency on January 1, the fourth time it has headed the group comprising 11 full member nations and 10 partner countries.
The sale of Russian twin-engine stealth fighter aircraft Su-57 is on the agenda, Peskov said.
Trade and economic cooperation are also expected to figure prominently in the bilateral deliberations.
Peskov further said that Russia is awaiting negotiations with India on setting up new nuclear power plants.
On the Russia-Ukraine ear, Peskov said, “We know the position of India on Ukrainian conflict, and to a great extent, it corresponds with our own position. Because we do want the solution of the Ukrainian conflict by peaceful means.”
On America’s proposed move to levy 100 per cent tariffs on countries buying Russian crude oil, the Kremlin official said it is “illegal and unacceptable.”
Just over a week ago, Modi and Putin met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Besides Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping is most likely to participate in the BRICS Summit.
Other leaders expected at the summit include South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is also expected to attend.
