Bhubaneswar: In a major push to modernise railway infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually inaugurate seven redeveloped railway stations in Odisha on Friday, July 17, as part of a nationwide rollout of 75 upgraded stations under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS).
The stations — Balangir, Barpali, Paralakhemundi, Talcher, Kesinga, Baripada, and Bimalgarh — have been redeveloped at a total cost of approximately Rs 109 crore to offer enhanced passenger amenities by creating world class railway infrastructure while preserving the unique cultural and architectural identity of each region. The main ceremony will be anchored from the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment station in Punjab.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launched in 2022, targets the comprehensive redevelopment of over 1,300 stations nationwide, aiming to create world-class, future-ready transport hubs that serve as vibrant city centres, while catering to the evolving needs of passengers.
Upgraded Amenities for Passengers
The redeveloped stations now feature several key improvements designed for better accessibility, comfort, and convenience:
>> Modern station buildings with spacious waiting halls and improved platform shelters.
>> 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) equipped with lifts for seamless, barrier-free movement.
>> Widened approach roads and redesigned circulating areas with enhanced parking facilities to ease traffic flow.
>> Upgraded lighting, modern toilets, digital passenger information systems, and standardised signage.
A standout feature is the integration of Odisha’s cultural identity. Station architecture incorporates locally inspired motifs, artwork, and elements reflecting the state’s traditional handloom, handicrafts, and tribal heritage, creating a distinctive and welcoming ambience for passengers and visitors alike.
Boost to Regional Development
Besides improving travel experience, the redeveloped stations are expected to serve as important catalysts for regional growth by strengthening connectivity and supporting tourism, trade, education and local economic activities. They are envisioned not merely as transit points, but as vibrant public spaces that reflect the aspirations, culture and development of the region.
“The redevelopment of these seven stations marks another milestone in Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to provide safe, modern, inclusive, and comfortable travel facilities while contributing to the overall socio-economic development of Odisha,” a Railways spokesperson was quoted as saying.
