PM SHRI Initiative: On Teachers Day, Modi Announces Upgradation Of 14,500 Schools

New Delhi: On the occasion of Teachers Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new initiative — PM SHRI (PM ScHools for Rising India).

Under this centrally sponsored scheme, 14,500 existing schools from across the country — managed by Central government, state governments, UT governments or local bodies — will be selected for further upgradation and development.

PM SHRI schools will showcase all components of National Education Policy 2020 and act as model schools which will also offer mentorship to other schools in their vicinity.

Apart from qualitative teaching, learning and cognitive development, the aim of these schools will be to create holistic and well-rounded individuals equipped with key 21st century skills.

The method of teaching in these schools will be more experimental, holistic, integrated, play/toy-based (particularly in foundational years), inquiry-driven, discovery-oriented, learner-centred, discussion-based, flexible and enjoyable, according to an Education Ministry press release.

Schools under this programme will be equipped with modern infrastructure including labs, smart classrooms, libraries, sports equipment, art room etc. They will also be developed as ‘green schools’ with water conservation, waste recycling, energy-efficient infrastructure and integration of organic lifestyle in curriculum.
