Brahmapur: Rooftop solar is witnessing unprecedented momentum across Southern Odisha as an increasing number of households embrace clean energy under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Driven by sustained consumer awareness initiatives and seamless implementation by TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL), the scheme is transforming the way consumers perceive solar energy. What was once considered a costly alternative is now emerging as a practical, affordable, and long-term solution for reducing electricity bills while promoting environmental sustainability.

The growing public confidence in rooftop solar is reflected in the rising number of installations across the TPSODL operational area. So far, 54,390 families have applied under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Of these, 22,242 households have already installed rooftop solar systems under the scheme. Out of which 12,743 consumers have adopted rooftop solar through TPSODL’s Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) Model.

“Our electricity bill used to be very high because we are a large family and our power consumption was significant. During a TPSODL awareness campaign, we learned about the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. With TPSODL’s support, we installed a rooftop solar system, received the subsidy on time, and now our electricity bill is minimal. I urge every household to adopt solar because it is affordable, sustainable, and environment-friendly,” said Ranjita Sethi, a beneficiary of the scheme.

Among all operational districts, Ganjam has emerged as the leader with 14,278 rooftop solar installations, making it one of the top two districts in Odisha for rooftop solar adoption. The momentum is also steadily growing across Gajapati (1492), Nabarangpur (1328), Rayagada (1452), Boudhagad (1,087), Koraput (1,169), Malkangiri (714) and Kandhamala (649), indicating the increasing acceptance of renewable energy across both urban and rural communities.

A significant driver behind this transition has been TPSODL’s Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) Model, which has made rooftop solar affordable and accessible. Under the model, consumers can install a 1 kW rooftop solar system by paying only Rs 1,875. Consumers opting for a 2 KW system receive a combined subsidy of Rs 1.10 lakh, while those installing a 3 KW system receive financial assistance of Rs 1.38 lakh from the Central and state governments. State government is providing highest subsidy to the beneficiaries among all the states in the country.

The encouraging response also reflects a changing consumer mindset, with rooftop solar increasingly being viewed as a smart investment that offers long-term financial savings, energy independence and environmental benefits. Through continuous awareness drives, consumer engagement programmes and simplified adoption processes, TPSODL continues to promote the large-scale adoption of clean energy across Southern Odisha.

Speaking on the growing adoption, Amit Kumar Garg, CEO, TPSODL, said, “The increasing response to PM Surya Ghar is encouraging. More families are recognising that rooftop solar is not only an investment in clean energy but also in long-term savings and energy independence. Through our awareness initiatives and the Utility-Led Aggregation Model, we are making solar simple, affordable and accessible for every eligible household. We remain committed to accelerating this clean energy transition across Southern Odisha.”

The growing adoption of rooftop solar under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana reflects the collective efforts of consumers, government support and TPSODL’s sustained facilitation. With every new installation, TPSODL is strengthening Southern Odisha’s transition towards clean energy and contributing to a greener, more sustainable and energy-secure future.
