Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance on Thursday apprehended an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Tigiria Police Station in Cuttack district for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.
The accused ASI has been identified as Pradeep Kumar Behera, posted at Tigiria Police Station in Cuttack district.
A Vigilance press release said that the ASI was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from a complainant in connection with a village dispute. Both parties involved in the dispute had submitted counter reports, which were later settled through mutual compromise.
Despite the settlement, the ASI allegedly demanded bribe from the complainant to avoid taking action based on the counter report. Acting on a complaint, Vigilance officials laid a trap and apprehended Behera while he was receiving the bribe amount.
The entire sum of Rs 5,000 was recovered from his possession and seized as evidence.
Following the arrest, simultaneous searches are being carried out at three locations linked to Behera to investigate possible disproportionate assets.
A case has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, at the Cuttack Vigilance Police Station. Further investigation is underway.
