Police detain one in Ravenshaw ragging case
Cuttack: The Commissionerate Police on Tuesday began probe into the alleged ragging incident at Ravenshaw University here. A video of a student allegedly being ragged and beaten up on Lalitgiri hostel premise of the varsity had gone viral the previous day.
“We have detained a youth after verifying CCTV footage of the camera installed at Lalitgiri hostel. He is being interrogated to extract more information about the incident. A search operation has been launched to nab the other accused students, who area still at large. We will also hold a discussion with the varsity authorities to check re-occurrence of such incidents on the campus in future,” a senior police officer said.
Earlier in the day, the victim’s mother filed a complaint with vice-chancellor of the varsity Pratap Chandra Sarangi. She alleged that the university was not safe for students. “The authorities here are not at all serious about the issue,” she added.
The vice-chancellor informed that the disciplinary committee of the varsity will conduct an inquiry into the incident.
According to a complaint lodged at Malgodown police station, the victim, a former student of the junior college, had gone to the varsity to check the merit list for admission into Plus III courses when a group of seniors forcibly dragged him to a hostel and thrashed him. The complainant alleged that the same group of students had also ragged him inside the hostel two years ago. He had also posted the video of the entire incident on social media.
