The assembly elections for its 90 constituencies were held in three phases – September 18, September 25, and October 1 – after a gap of 10 years.

This is the first time that Jammu and Kashmir conducted its assembly elections as an Union Territory after the scrapping of Article 370 in 2019, which led to the splitting of the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

The voter turnout was 63.88%, as per the Election Commission of India.

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and Congress had forged an alliance even as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contested separately. The PDP-BJP coalition had collapsed in 2018 in Jammu and Kashmir.
