Dhaka: Popular Bangladeshi actor Nusraat Faria was arrested at Dhaka airport on Sunday shortly before she was to board a flight to Thailand.
Nusraat, who played the role of now-ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s biopic ‘Mujib: The Making of a Nation’, was nabbed from the immigration check point at the Shahjalal International Airport.
An arrest warrant was issued against Nusraat in connection with a case filed last year on charges of attempted murder during anti-government protests, which led to Hasina resigning and fleeing to India, Prothom Alo newspaper reported quoting a source from the Dhaka airport’s immigration unit.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Shafiqul Islam confirmed that the actor had been arrested.
Nusraat was taken to Vatara police station and later transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) office of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), according to Prothom Alo.
The 31-year-old actor has worked in several Indian films, specifically Bengali movies.
Having started her career as a model, Nusraat made her acting debut in ‘Aashiqui’ with West Bengal actor Ankush Hazra. She went on to work in a number of Indo-Bangladeshi joint venture projects, before featuring in Bangladeshi films.
In 2023, she was roped in to play Hasina in Shyam Benegal-directed ‘Mujib: The Making of a Nation’. A co-production between India and Bangladesh, the film featured Arifin Shuvoo as Sheikh Mujib.
