Bhubaneswar: A day after Kalabaisakhi (nor’wester) storm struck several parts of Odisha bringing relief from the scorching heat, the day temperature hovered around 30-35°C at most places by 2.30 pm on Friday.

The highest maximum temperature of 35°C was recorded at Rourkela, followed by Jharsuguda at 34.2°C, Keonjhar at 33.6°C, Hirakud at 33.2°C and Sambalpur at 33°C. The coastal areas were relatively cooler with Puri at 31.4°C, Gopalpur at 29.8°C, Paradip at 30°C and Balasore at 31.2°C. State capital Bhubaneswar recorded 31.6°C.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), stormy weather conditions may continue to prevail in the state as the trough/wind discontinuity from South Odisha to Gulf of Mannar across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu persists. An orange warning of thunderstorm accompanied by lightning, hail and gusty surface wind (50-60 kmph) very likely to in the afternoon/evening hours has been issued for districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Malkangiri, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Gajapati and Rayagada on May 1.

People in these districts have been advised to keep watch on weather and move to safer places during the thunderstorm activity to protect from lightning and follow traffic advisories in urban areas. “Also harvesting of crops may be regulated judicially and farmers are advised to use hail nets to protect vegetables and crops from hail,” it added.

Similar weather condition with wind speed of 40-50 kmph may also occur in Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Sundargarh, Jajpur, Nuapada and Kendrapada, and with wind speed of 30-40 kmph in Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Jajpur, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh during this period.

While there is no further orange warning, thunderstorm activity with wind speed raging from 30-50 kmph may continue in southern and coastal parts of the state till May 7.

Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph occasionally gusting to 60 kmph may prevail along & off the coast on May 1 while wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph occasionally gusting to 60kmph is also likely along & off the North Odisha coast from May 2-4.

The MeT has also forecast a further dip in the day temperature by 2-3°C after two days.
