President’s Medal For 2 Odisha Cops Ahead Of Republic Day; Check The List Of 29 Awardees

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Vigilance SP, Sambalpur Division, Saroj Kumar Samal and constable Satyabadi Mallick from Odisha Police were awarded the prestigious President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), on the eve of the Republic Day, on Saturday.

They are among the 29 personnel of police, fire, and civil defence personnel to have been conferred with gallantry and service medals, according to a government statement issued on Saturday.

While two police personnel received PSM, six were conferred with Medal for Gallantry (GM) and 11 with Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).

In Fire Service, one from Odisha was awarded PSM and four with MSM. Three from the state received PSM and one conferred with MSM in Home Guard & Civil Defence service. Two were awarded the MSM in Correctional Service.

The PSM is awarded for a special distinguished record in service and MSM is awarded for valuable service characterised by resource and devotion to duty. The GM is awarded for a rare conspicuous act of gallantry and a conspicuous act of gallantry respectively in saving life and property or in preventing crime or arresting criminals, the risk incurred being estimated with due regard to the obligations and duties of the officer concerned.

These 29 were among 942 police, fire, and civil defence personnel awarded gallantry and service medals ahead of Republic Day. Among them, 95 received gallantry medals for their brave actions in various regions.

Of the 101 PSM, 85 have been awarded to police personnel, five to fire services personnel, seven to civil defence and home guard service and four to correctional service. Among the 746 MSM, 634 have been awarded to police service, 37 to fire service, 39 to civil defence and home guard service and 36 to correctional service. Among the gallantry award winners, 28 deployed in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, 28 in the Jammu and Kashmir region, three in the northeast and 36 posted in other regions are being awarded for their gallant action, the statement added.
