Pune: A 22-year-old woman was allegedly raped in a high-end residential society in Pune’s Kondhwa area by a man posing as a courier delivery agent.
According to Pune Police, the accused gained entry to the woman’s flat at around 7.30 pm on Wednesday, when she was alone as her brother had stepped out for some work.
The shocking incident triggered outrage across the city after details of the crime emerged.
The accused introduced himself as a courier boy and told her that he was there to deliver a letter from her bank, and her signature was required.
He said he didn’t have a pen on him. As the woman went to her bedroom to get a pen, the man forced his way into the flat, locked the door, and pounced on her. He then allegedly raped her.
“He asked for a pen to sign (a document) and as she turned back, he came inside the house and latched the door and raped her,” PTI quoted Pune Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Rajkumar Shinde as saying.
As per preliminary reports, the accused used a chemical spray to make the woman unconscious before sexually assaulting her.
Once she regained consciousness, the woman saw a threatening message on her phone which read, “I will come again.” The accused had also taken a selfie on her phone.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the housing society and nearby areas as part of their investigation. A forensic team was also at the spot to collect evidence and help in the probe.
An FIR has been registered under sections 64 and 77 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police’s immediate task is to catch the accused.
“Currently, 10 teams from Pune Police are working on tracing the accused,” DCP Shinde said.
