Sangrur: A man allegedly consumed a poisonous substance outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Punjab’s Sangrur district, accusing officials of ignoring complaints about the alleged sale of drugs in his village. The incident has triggered sharp criticism from Congress and BJP leaders against the Aam Aadmi Party government.

The man, identified as Jagseer Singh alias Jagga, was taken to a government hospital in Sangrur before being referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

Jagseer allegedly claimed that drugs were being sold in Namol village and that both the sarpanch and the local administration had been informed several times. However, he alleged that no effective steps had been taken to stop the activity, as reported by NDTV.

His friend, Manjinder Singh, who was present at the DC office, alleged that Jagseer had previously recorded videos purportedly showing people selling chitta. He claimed Jagseer was later attacked but said the police did not take action despite being informed.

Manjinder said Jagseer had told him that he had consumed sulphas.

Dr Iqbalpreet Singh said the patient had consumed a poisonous substance and was given first aid before being referred to Rajindra Hospital. The doctor, however, identified the substance as “Farnel”.

Opposition Targets AAP

Congress leader Sachin Pilot alleged that Jagseer faced threats and harassment after posting videos about drug sales. He questioned the AAP government’s response and the role of the local administration.

Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa alleged that Jagseer was threatened and assaulted for speaking against drugs, but police failed to act on his complaint. He challenged the government’s “Drug-Free Punjab” claim, asking how anti-drug activists could feel safe in the Chief Minister’s own district. He said the incident raised serious questions about the administration’s response to the drug problem.

BJP leader Parminder Brar linked the incident to the cases of Gulzar Singh and Mohanjeet Singh in Sangrur.

Former Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu alleged that people opposing drugs were being targeted instead of drug sellers. He also claimed that villagers and anti-drug activists faced threats and false cases.
