Puri: In a significant move to strengthen security, the security sub-committee of Shree Jagannath Temple has put a complete ban on the use of mobile phones within the shrine premises in Odisha’s Puri.
Even police personnel and servitors will not be allowed to carry mobile phones inside the 12th century shrine.
The announcement was made by sub-committee chairman, Girish Chandra Murmu, after a detailed security review meeting.
Discussions focused on both internal and external safety of the temple, which attracts lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad every year.
In order to ensure uninterrupted communication without compromising on security, walkie-talkie devices will soon be introduced for authorised personnel.
These measures are purely aimed at enhancing the temple’s security system and not intended to cause inconvenience to anyone, said Murmu.
The sub-committee discussed multiple aspects of temple safety, including crowd control, surveillance, and emergency response.
Murmu stated some responsibilities will be handled by the temple administration, while others will be managed by the government. The sub-committee also plans to study security models of other major temples before finalising additional measures.
The ban on mobile phone is expected to reduce distractions, prevent unauthorised photography, and enhance spiritual ambiance. Authorities will install secure lockers for visitors to store their devices before entering the temple complex.
Proper training would be given to security personnel to operate the walkie-talkie system efficiently. The move is part of a broader strategy to modernise temple management while preserving tradition, said officials.
