Moscow: In a strong show of support for Tehran amid escalating hostilities, Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for an immediate end to what he described as “armed Israeli-American aggression” against Iran, while conveying deep condolences over the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and numerous others.
The remarks came during a late-night phone call on March 6 with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as confirmed by the Kremlin. Putin expressed profound grief for the loss of Khamenei, members of his family, key Iranian political and military leaders, and “numerous civilians” in recent strikes.
“Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s principled stance in favour of an immediate cessation of hostilities, the rejection of force as a method to solve any issues surrounding Iran or arising in the Middle East, and a swift return to the path of diplomatic resolution,” the Kremlin statement said.
Putin also highlighted his ongoing contacts with leaders of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states — including Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar — to coordinate diplomatic efforts and prevent regional spillover.
Pezeshkian reciprocated stating that “Russia’s solidarity with the Iranian people as they defend their sovereignty and the independence of their country” was deeply appreciated. He provided a detailed briefing on the “latest active phase of the conflict,” including Iran’s defensive measures and calls for international intervention.
