Ragging At Odisha Govt Engineering College: 5 Students Arrested, Suspended From Institute For A Year
Keonjhar: Five students of a government engineering college in Odisha’s Keonjhar district were arrested by the police on Wednesday for allegedly ragging and thrashing a junior.
According to sources, Keonjhar Town Police arrested the five for their involvement in alleged ragging and physical assault of a second year student of the college.
The five arrested students were earlier suspended from the college for a year by the authorities of the institute in connection with the incident.
The action was taken by the college authorities after the second-year student of the engineering college bought ragging charges against his seniors.
He accused five seniors of thrashing him with wooden plank and rods at the hostel. The injured student, Biswajeet Behera, is undergoing treatment at district headquarters hospital here. He suffered injuries on his back, hands and legs.
According to sources, the five seniors knocked on his door around 2.20 am and barged into his room. They then severely thrashed him. He was rushed to the hospital by the hostel warden. It is being alleged to be a revenge attack on Biswajeet for having complained about a ragging incident in the college to the principal.
Following the incident, his family members lodged a complaint with police and demanded strict action against the accused.
Principal of the college Saroj Kumar Sarangi also visited the hospital and enquired about his health. He has called a meeting of the anti-ragging cell of the institute before the action was initiated against the senior students. The authorities suspended the five accused students from the college for one year.
