Rain Pounds Talcher; Wind Warning For These Odisha Districts

Bhubaneswar: As heavy rains lashed coastal Odisha, the coal town of Talcher recorded the highest rainfall of 160 mm between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday.

The Millennium city of Cuttack registered a record 94 mm rainfall while Boudh registered 90 mm; Angul recorded 74 mm and Sonepur  68 mm in on the day.

The capital city of Bhubaneswar and Puri too witnessed heavy showers on the day. The rainfall in the capital in the last 24 hours stood at 199.9 mm while Puri recorded 342.5 mm rainfall between Sunday 8.30 am and Monday 8.30 am, the Regional Meteorological Centre stated in its release.

Meanwhile, the deep depression over North Coastal Odisha moved further west-northwestwards during past 6 hours with a speed of 13 kmph and lay centred at 14.30 hrs IST, over north interior Odisha, about 90 km east-southeast of Keonjhargarh and 70 km
northwest of Chandbali.

The depression is very likely to continue to move west-north westwards across north interior Odisha and North Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh during next 48 hours and then weaken into a depression during the next 12 hours.

Under the impact of the depression, red warning has been issued for 7 places. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at a few places with extremely heavy (>20cm) rain at one or two places over the districts of Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda and Bargarh.

Orange Warning has been issued for Balangir, Sundargarh, Boudh, Keonjhar, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kendrapada, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Cuttack.

Some areas are likely to experience flash flood or waterlogging and inundation in low lying areas. Rise in river water level too has been predicted following which people have been advised not to venture near the river.

Surface wind speed reaching 50 to 60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is very likely during the next 12 hours and decrease gradually becoming 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph along and off Odisha coast and over North & West central Bay of Bengal till September 15. Sea condition too is likely to be rough to very rough.

In the interior areas the surface wind speed is expected to reach 35 to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph in the districts of north Odisha, Boudh,
Sonepur, Khurda, Puri, Ganjam and Nayagarh.
