Bhubaneswar: The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued a nowcast warning for six districts of Odisha, including twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Kataka, till 3 pm on Thursday.
Light to moderate rain accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms may occur in Khordha (including the capital city of Bhubaneswar), Kataka (including Kataka city), Puri, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj and Nayagada in the next 2-3 hours.
People in these districts have been asked to keep a watch on the weather and move to safer places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.
Notably, Odisha may experience another spell of heavy rain coupled with thunderstorm activity as a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a low pressure area by August 28. On August 27, a yellow warning has been issued for the districts of Baleshwar, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj, while thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind may occur in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada districts. The heavy rain warning continues for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj, the following day. Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind may occur in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha, Nayagada districts.
The intensity of rain may increase thereafter with an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall issued for the districts of Anugola, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj on August 29; Sundaragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj districts on August 30; Sundaragada, Anugola, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur on August 31, and Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, and Kendujhar districts on September 1.
