New Delhi: The trailer of ‘Ramayana’, one of India’s most ambitious and expensive cinematic productions, was unveiled on Thursday, promising a grand theatrical spectacle.
Blending state-of-the-art visual effects with the timeless tale of the battle between good and evil, the film offers a fresh take on the revered epic on an epic scale.
The four-minute trailer begins with Yash’s Ravana embarking on his quest to become one of the most powerful rulers on Earth before shifting focus to King Dashrath of Ayodhya.
Ranbir Kapoor then makes his first appearance as Lord Ram, introduced as a blindfolded archer honing his skills with remarkable precision.
As the story unfolds, Ram is declared the heir to Ayodhya’s throne and wins Sita’s hand in a grand swayamvar.
However, the joyous celebrations are cut short when Queen Kaikeyi invokes her boons, forcing Ram into a 14-year exile.
The trailer goes on to showcase Ram, Sita, and Lakshman navigating the hardships of exile, battling fearsome demons and encountering Ravana’s sister, Shurpanakha, played by Rakul Preet Singh.
Following her confrontation with Lakshman, a furious Ravana vows revenge and abducts Sita, setting the stage for the epic conflict.
The trailer concludes with Ram’s powerful pledge to defeat Ravana and rescue his wife, teasing the legendary battle at the heart of the epic.
While Sunny Deol has been cast as Hanuman, the beloved character does not appear in the trailer, suggesting his role may be unveiled later in the first film or reserved for the sequel.
Mounted on a reported budget of ₹4,000 crore, the two-part epic is directed by Nitesh Tiwari, and is backed by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios and the eight-time Academy Award-winning VFX powerhouse DNEG, in association with Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.
‘Ramayana: Part One’ will release worldwide on Diwali 2026, while part two will hit theatres next year on Diwali.
“Very few stories continue to shape everyday life thousands of years after they were first told. The Ramayana does,” the director said in a statement.
He added, “Today, we finally have the artists, the technology, the craftsmanship and the collective ambition to present this extraordinary cultural legacy to audiences everywhere with the authenticity, scale and cinematic excellence it deserves.
