Mumbai: Ranveer Singh’s exit from Farhan Akhtar’s much-anticipated ‘Don 3’ has been in the headlines for a while, and a new report now sheds more light on what led to his exit.
While earlier reports cited creative differences, a report by the Free Press Journal suggests that Ranveer wanted to take the film in a darker and more intense direction, including stronger language and increased violence, an approach that reportedly did not align with the filmmakers’ vision.
Ranveer reportedly believed that the character of Don should evolve to match today’s preference for more intense and violent storytelling.
However, Farhan Akhtar was not in favour of incorporating harsh or abusive language into the film.
He is said to have pointed out that earlier versions of Don, led by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, did not depend on such elements.
The report added that Farhan remained firm in his stance and was unwilling to give in to any pressure.
“Farhan very much wanted to make the film he originally set out to make,” a source was quoted as saying by the portal.
Ranveer exited ‘Don 3’ in 2025, with reports of script differences and delays bringing the fallout into the public eye.
Earlier reports had also suggested that Excel Entertainment was seeking around ₹40 crore in compensation, citing pre-production costs, scheduling disruptions, and related losses.
The production house maintained that much of the groundwork had been completed with Ranveer’s approval.
It was also reported that the actor agreed to return a portion of the amount.
Speaking about the fallout, Farhan told Hollywood Reporter India, “What I have learnt is to expect the unexpected. Nothing can be taken for granted till you actually have it on film.”
He said his journey in films has been remarkable so far, adding that tough phases are unavoidable and he prefers to handle them calmly and move forward.
