New Delhi: There was confusion after the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) of an AIr India flight from Amritsar to Birmingham in the UK deployed shortly before it landed on Saturday.
A check of the aircraft revealed that all electrical and hydraulic systems were functioning normally, an official said. Efforts are now being made to find out why the RAT deployed.
“The flight landed safely at Birmingham and there was nothing wrong with the systems. Yet, the RAT got deployed during its final approach,” an official said.
The aircraft was grounded for checks, leading to the cancellation of the subsequent flight from Birmingham to New Delhi.
“On 4 October 2025, Air India flight AI117 from Amritsar to Birmingham experienced deployment of its Ram Air Turbine (RAT) during final approach,” Air India said in a statement.
The RAT is an emergency system that gets deployed in case of an electrical failure in the aircraft. The turbine allows the plane to cruise for some time till the issue is resolved and the engines are reignited.
Incidentally, the RAT had deployed in the ill-fated AIr India flight that crashed immediately after take off from Ahmedabad on June 12 this year. The disaster led to 260 deaths.
