Relatives Or Friends Can’t Replace Professional Therapists, Odia IPS Officer On Depression

Mumbai/Bhubaneswar: MS Dhoni, Chhichhore and Kai Po Che fame actor, Sushant Singh Rajput’s death by suicide sent shock waves through Bollywood and once again brought to the fore issues related to mental health care.

Posts about having family and friends around to tackle the issue have been doing the rounds on social media since then. Netizens also slammed Mahesh Bhatt after an article quoting a close associate of his published in the National Herald dubbed Sushant as a Schizophrenic and said that the director had suggested his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty to break up with him. People were upset as they felt Sushant needed friends around at this juncture to help to tide over this crisis.

However, Odisha-born IPS officer Basant Rath in a Twitter post on Thursday said relatives or friends can’t replace professional therapists. 

“When I was going through depression and contemplating suicide in 1994, I reached out to a psychiatrist. I didn’t rely on my girlfriends or boyfriends or family members to help me survive those two years,” he wrote.

The 2000-batch officer of J&K cadre was born in 1972 in Odisha and studied Sociology at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
