New Delhi: The Central government on Thursday filed a review petition in Supreme Court against its November 11 release order of six convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, ANI reported.
The apex court last week set free all six convicts serving life sentences – including Nalini Sriharan — for killing the former Prime Minister at Sriperumbudur in 1991.
A G Perarivalan, a seventh convict in the case, was released by the Supreme Court six months ago. As Nalini and the others sought release also, a bench of Justices B R Gavai and B V Nagarathna ruled in their favour saying they should get the benefit of its order releasing co Perarivalan.
The Centre argued that it was not heard in the matter as it was not made a party during proceedings on the case.
The Centre’s counsel further argued that the Supreme Court order in the case is “legally flawed” and sought permission from the court to argue against the release of Nalini, Murugan, Santhan, Robert Payas and Jayakumar.
The Congress party had expressed dissatisfaction with Supreme Court’s order, calling it unacceptable and erroneous.
