Dr APJ Abdul Kalam loved spending time in the midst of people. Wherever he got an audience, he shared his ideas and philosophy — as a scientist and also as the ceremonial head of the largest democracy.
He had a soft corner for students, and was surrounded by hundreds of them when he breathed his last while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong, on July 27, 2015.

Following the demise of the ‘people’s president’, the government had announced a seven-day national mourning. Many states declared the next day as a holiday for schools and colleges.
The morning after, the front pages of major national dailies and tabloids saluted Dr Kalam and cartoonists joined in to pay their last tribute to the much loved public figure.
