New Delhi: Veteran actor Sridevi passed away in Dubai following a massive cardiac arrest in the early morning hours on Monday. She was 54 and is survived by her husband Boney Kapoor and daughters Janhvi and Khushi.
Boney and Khushi were with Sridevi when she died. They were in Dubai to attend a family function. Janhvi could not accompany them due to her shooting engagements, reports said. Sridevi was step-mother to actor Arjun Kapoor and his sister Anshula, who Boney had from late first wife Mona.
Eminent cinema personalities, fans and well-wishers mourned her death.
Known for her versatility, Sridevi reigned over Bollywood in the eighties after tasting success in South Indian movies. She made her movie debut as a child artiste in Tamil flick ‘Thunaivan’ (1967) and acted in several Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She made her Hindi film debut with ‘Solwa Sawan’ in 1978 and made it big with Jeetendra-starrer ‘Himmatwala’ in 1983.
A good dancer with strong screen presence, Sridevi acted in several hit movies like Sadma (1983), ‘Mawali (1983), ‘Tohfa (1984), ‘Mr India’ (1987), ‘Chandni’ (1989), ‘Chaalbaaz’ (1989), ‘Lamhe’ (1991) and ‘Gumrah’ (1993).
In 1997, she retired from acting after starring in ‘Judaai’, only to return in 2012 with the critically-acclaimed film ‘English Vinglish’.
Last year, Sridevi featured in ‘Mom’ opposite Nawazuddin Siddique and Akshaye Khanna. She has also done a special appearance in Shah Rukh Khan’s next movie ‘Zero’, which is scheduled for release in December.
