Bhubaneswar: A violent altercation broke out at a women’s hostel at Jayadev Vihar under Nayapalli police limits in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, after the owner’s wife allegedly physically assaulted young female boarders over rent dispute.
According to the victim’s account, who had been staying in the hostel for past three years, tension had been brewing over the past few months due to an ongoing personal dispute between the building owner and his wife. The situation escalated when the essential services to the hostel, including electricity and water supply, were cut off for four days. When the residents raised their voices against the harassment and expressed their inability to vacate the premises immediately without prior notice, the owner’s wife along with her daughter forcefully entered her room, verbally abused and attacked her.
During the scuffle, the victim sustained severe head injuries and three to four other boarders who attempted to intervene and rescue her were also injured. Following the incident, they approached Nayapalli Police to lodge a complaint detailing months of harassment, power cuts, and the violent assault. The victims added that they used to deposit the rent with the owner’s sister and had earlier reported the matter to PCR, leading to the assault this morning as they were leaving the room.
Based on the complaint, local police have initiated an investigation into the matter, while reactions from the hostel owner and his wife are currently awaited.
