Kolkata: In a significant administrative move amid the political transition in Bengal, all retired bureaucrats appointed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have been barred from attending government offices ahead of the formation of a new BJP-led government in the state.
According to officials, retired officers who were still serving in various departments have been instructed not to report to work with immediate effect. The directive will remain in force until the new government assumes office.
Sources, as cited in a NDTV report, stated that the order was conveyed by Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala from Lok Bhavan to departmental secretaries, who in turn communicated it within their respective departments. The communication was reportedly verbal but widely circulated across offices.
The development comes in the backdrop of a major political shift in the state following the 2026 Assembly election results, where the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a decisive victory and is set to form the next government. The saffron party secured 207 out of 294 seats.
Several of the retired officials appointed under the outgoing administration have also recently resigned and vacated government accommodations, signalling a transition phase within the state bureaucracy.
