Rituals For Construction Of Chariots For Rath Yatra Performed In Puri

Puri: The initial rituals for starting the construction of chariots for Rath Yatra were performed by worshipping the logs in the town on the auspicious occasion of Saraswati Puja on Saturday evening.

As per the tradition, Raj Purohit (main priest) and other priests first offered puja to Devi Saraswati and then performed the rituals for three logs kept in front of the Jagannath Temple office, here. They lighted lamps and incense sticks and offered coconuts in prasad as part of the rituals.

The logs will be used in construction of Nandighosh, Taladhwaja and Devadalana chariots for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra respectively.

The three Dhaura logs each of 12 feet in length had arrived here from Nayagarh forest range on Wednesday. Out of total 765 logs needed for construction of three chariots, total 63 logs have arrived. The logs include 34 pieces of Asana trees and 29 pieces of Dhaura trees.

The construction work of the chariots will begin at ‘Rath Khala’ (workshop for making chariots) on the Grand Road of the town on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya on May 3.
