Notably, it is India’s highest broad gauge railway tunnel and is located on a hill top at Maliguda village, which is 21 km eastwards of Jeypore and 43 km away from Koraput. The place is also popular as a weekend picnic spot.
The Maliguda tunnel lies on a 430-km-long railway route that was built with Japanese collaboration between 1961 and 1966. It was built for the supply of iron ore from Kirandul in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district to Vizag port in Andhra Pradesh and runs via Dantewada, Jagdalpur, Jeypore, Koraput, Padua, Araku and Kottavalasa.
