Cuttack: Robust police arrangements are being made across Odisha to ensure maintenance of law and order during the festivals scheduled over the next few weeks. State director general of police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania held a virtual review meeting on this, from the police headquarters in Cuttack on Friday evening.

While Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on March 30/31, Shri Ram Navami will be celebrated on April 6. Hanuman Jayanti falls on April 14 and Maha Vishuba Sankranti will also be celebrated across the state. The festival of Holi witnessed five murders in the state. The Opposition latched on to this and protested against alleged deterioration in the law-and-order situation across Odisha.

During the meeting, DGP Khurania directed senior officers to ensure that the celebrations are conducted in an orderly manner. He urged proactive measures to handle any potential incidents or disruptions. Special focus was laid on maintaining vigilance on social media to curb the spreading of rumours and misinformation. Cyber cells in various districts have been instructed to monitor social media platforms round the clock.

Earlier this week, communal clashes broke out in Nagpur, Maharashtra, due to rumours regarding the alleged desecration of religious items by members of right-wing groups during a protest against Aurangzeb’s tomb at Sambhaji Nagar (earlier Aurangabad). State governments across the country have taken measures to prevent the spread of rumours thereafter.

“The DGP also directed the Crime Branch to organize a dedicated workshop to enhance the capabilities of police officers and personnel. Key security measures discussed included increased patrolling in sensitive areas, strict checking at entry and exit points, restrictions on processions in high-risk zones, installation of CCTV cameras, including AI-enabled systems, at urban hotspots, enhanced intelligence gathering and coordination with local peace committees, engaging local representatives to maintain harmony and action against habitual offenders and rumour mongers,” an official said.

Khurania also directed senior police officers across all districts to deploy additional security forces during public processions and rallies, ensuring that police are prepared to handle any untoward incidents. Considering rising temperatures during this period, the DGP stressed on arrangements for the welfare of police personnel on duty, ensuring they remain rehydrated and well-equipped to beat the heat.
