Balangir: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has seized cash to the tune of Rs 70 lakh from the Ernakulam–Hatia Dharti Aaba Superfast Express at Titilagarh station in Odisha’s Bolangir district.
While conducting a routine inspection, RPF personnel found the huge sum stashed inside a suspicious looking bag in one of the train compartments.
Official sources said two persons, identified as Prabhat Kumar Sahu and Umesh Prasad, were found in possession of the cash and were immediately detained for interrogation.
The two men reportedly failed to provide valid explanation for the cash. Officials took them into custody for further interrogation and informed the Income Tax Department for investigation.
This incident has raised concerns about illegal cash movement through trains. Authorities are now probing the source and intended destination of the money and trying to ascertain whether the cash had any link with the upcoming by-election to Nuapada Assembly constituency.
As the investigation continues, officials are reviewing CCTV footage and passenger records to trace any possible links to larger financial irregularities.
